Woolwax (Lanolin)

  • Woolwax is a lanolin-based undercoating designed to protect your vehicle from rust and corrosion. It’s a thick, creeping formula that clings to metal surfaces—even in harsh environments like gravel roads or salted winter highways. Unlike hard coatings, Woolwax remains soft and self-healing, allowing it to flex with your vehicle and continuously block moisture and salt. It’s safe on rubber, electrical components, and won’t crack or peel over time, making it ideal for long-term rust prevention in real-world driving conditions.

  • Yes—Woolwax can be applied directly over surface rust. It works by sealing out moisture and oxygen, which stops rust from continuing to spread. While it won’t reverse existing corrosion, it will slow or halt its progression by cutting off the elements rust needs to grow. For the best results, it’s ideal to descale, laser clean and prime before application of Woolwax.

  • Woolwax stays wet and tacky—it does not dry or cure like hard coatings. This is by design: the soft, lanolin-based formula allows it to creep into seams and hidden areas, maintaining a flexible, self-healing barrier that resists water and salt. Because it stays soft, it continues to protect even after abrasions, making it ideal for long-term rust prevention in demanding environments.

  • No—Woolwax is formulated to stay in place, even though it doesn’t dry. Its thick, tacky consistency allows it to cling to metal surfaces, resisting washout from rain, snow, and road spray. In fact, it’s been proven to outlast many dry, hard coatings, especially in high-impact environments like gravel roads or winter driving. While some light film may wear over time, the core protection remains—and routine inspections or touch-ups help keep it performing at its best.

  • Woolwax may attract a light layer of dust or dirt initially, but it won’t cause buildup. Because it’s non-drying and contains no solvents, it doesn’t get tacky or sticky. Any loose debris that settles on it can be easily rinsed off with a garden hose. In fact, many professional applicators recommend driving down a dirt road after application—the sand acts as a bonus layer of protection, helping to prevent salt from sticking and enhancing the product’s performance.

  • For most vehicles, an annual application is recommended to maintain full protection—especially if you're driving in harsh winter climates or on gravel roads. In milder conditions, or for vehicles that aren't driven daily, you might stretch that to every 18–24 months. Since Woolwax stays soft and continues to creep over time, it offers ongoing protection, but routine reapplication ensures coverage stays consistent year after year.

  • Over time, Woolwax transitions from a wet coating to a soft, greasy film that’s much less messy. Most mechanics say it’s no worse than working around oil or other fluids, which are common in any shop environment. Plus, it makes life easier by preventing rusted bolts and corroded parts—so repairs are quicker and cleaner in the long run. For most vehicle owners, the occasional contact is a small price to pay for the extended life and reliability that Woolwax provides.

  • Absolutely. Once the Woolwax coating has settled for a few weeks, you can safely take your vehicle through regular car washes—including undercarriage sprays—without affecting the protection. Woolwax is extremely dense and built to withstand harsh conditions, including salt, brine, and road chemicals. While we don’t recommend power-washing the undercarriage, standard wash systems won’t make a dent in the coating. Woolwax is made to last and won’t wash off—even after repeated exposure to winter roads.

  • Yes—we get this question all the time. Woolwax is compatible with virtually all annual maintenance coatings, including other non-drying products. Its lanolin base creeps through existing layers to reach the bare metal underneath, providing excellent long-term corrosion protection. Woolwax is also more resistant to wash-off than most non-drying coatings, has very little odor, and features a thick, non-drip formula that clings exceptionally well—even when layered over another product.

  • Not at all. Woolwax has very little odor compared to other undercoating products, making it more pleasant to apply and safer to use in enclosed spaces.
