Underbody Rust Removal
and Metal Treatment

  • It all begins with a vehicle you’re interested in getting undercoated. If it isn’t brand new, chances are you might have some rust forming. Living in MN is tough, our state heavily salts roadways with extremely corrosive chloride mixtures. It’s okay if you have some rust that needs to be attended to before undercoating, at Carson Undercoating we’re well equipped to handle it. To give an accurate estimate on cleanup cost and prep, please text/email us photos of your vehicle’s undercarriage.

  • Now that your vehicle is in our hands and we’ve assessed it, we’ll immediately get to work on cleaning up your vehicle’s undercarriage in preparation for undercoating. To do this, we wire wheel and sand accessible rusted areas down to clean bare metal.

  • Once we’ve finished cleaning up everything we can on your vehicle’s undercarriage, it’s time to move onto treating the metal. This extra step is very important, we apply 2 coats of Corroseal to ensure your vehicle is ready for undercoating. We do this since you can never remove 100% of existing rust. Corroseal, a water-based primer, contains two active ingredients: Tannic acid and an organic polymer. The first ingredient, tannic acid, reacts with iron oxide (rust) and chemically converts it to iron tannate, a dark-colored stable material. Tannins are a group of water- and alcohol-soluble natural products extracted from fruits, trees and grasses. The second active ingredient is a proprietary organic polymer that provides a protective primer layer. The overall chemical reaction converts rust into a stable, black protective polymeric coating that serves as an excellent primer for our Cosmoline or Woolwax undercoating.

  • Once the rust converter coats we applied have dried, it’s time to move onto whichever undercoating package you’ve chosen and really bring your vehicle back to life!

Rust Removal

Here is an example of a truck we worked on that required a healthy amount of prep before moving onto undercoating. To achieve this type of transformation, we need to wire wheel and sand the rusted areas of your vehicle. Once we’ve removed rust flake, scale, pitting and gotten to bare metal, we can move onto the next steps of the process.
Please note: There will always be some inaccessible areas on your vehicle we’re unable to remove rust from.

Metal Treatment

After sanding afflicted areas down to bare metal, it’s important to treat it to ensure rust won’t be coming back anytime soon. In this photo, you can see the entire process from start to finish. We can take a rusty undercarriage, sand it down to clean bare metal, treat the undercarriage with a powerful rust converting primer, then safely move onto undercoating.
